I find there are some common excuses that we all make about not getting regular exercise at one time or another.

Even though I am pretty hardcore when it comes to getting an hour of exercise five to six days a week, even I make excuses to just avoid it at times.

The thing is, I think we can all agree that there is an overabundance of evidence that supports the need for regular exercise. This regular exercise doesn’t mean that it has to be strenuous, and it doesn’t have to be overly time consuming, either.

For me, I find that getting regular exercise is so beneficial to me both physically and mentally. In fact, all this week on my morning Periscope broadcasts, I have been sharing things that I do to get it all done in a week. Exercise really would be on my list.

On days that I exercise, I have more energy, more motivation, am happier, and also have less stress since exercising in a major stress reliever for me. I can always tell that my fuse is much shorter on the days when I don’t exercise.

Of course we would all agree about many of the health benefits, but we are all human, too. Since exercise takes time and effort, it is one of those things that we tend to find excuses in order to avoid it.

Here are eight common excuses, some of which I am even guilty of at one time or another…and how to overcome them.

I don’t have time

The thing is, you won’t have the time if you don’t make the time. There are always so many things screaming for our attention, but it really can happen anywhere. As busy moms we can take walks with our kids, actively play at the park or play games of all kinds, or just hold boot camp during the winter months when stuck indoors. In order to get my exercise in I’ve run the stairs up and down countless times, done various workout videos, or pushed the hand lawnmower up and down the hills at my house with no power drive. The time won’t just magically happen, you have to make it happen, and you may have to get creative!

I don’t have the money for a gym membership

You don’t need a gym membership since there are so many things you can do inside and outside of your home, many of which I’ve already mentioned. I have had a gym membership for the past 20 years nonstop because it is something that is so necessary for me. Even while in a financial valley, I found a way to gather the money to pay for my gym membership. I don’t go to a fancy gym, in fact, it’s one of the cheapest gyms around, but I have sold stuff, made stuff to sell, and even taken on extra work in order to pay for my gym membership. If a gym membership is your desire as it is mine, get creative and find a way.

I don’t have enough energy left at the end of the day to exercise

If the end of the day is the only time you have to exercise, you have to find the energy to exercise. Believe me, there are times that I literally drag myself to the gym in the middle of blizzard conditions while sick, but I am always glad that I did once my workout is done. It really is as simple as telling yourself, “just do it!”

I can’t get up early enough to exercise

Just as with those who exercise at night, if the morning is your time, you need to make it happen. Even as little as 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference in our overall health. Make it a priority to get up just 15 minutes early if that is all you can manage, and get to it right away before you can make any more excuses!

I hate exercise

There are times that I say this, too, believe it or not. Every day that I have a long run scheduled, I absolutely dread it. For me, I find myself having a great run or having a horrible run – nothing in between. Since I never know if it will be a horrible run day, I really just hate the thought of getting out there. However, I know that it is important to my fitness goals. You must do this same thing. We have made some difficult decisions and made some big commitments while taking this Make Over Your Mornings course, so don’t stop now. Don’t stop with doing this thing that can make such a difference in your mornings, in your day, and in your life.

I’m too embarrassed, people will laugh at me!

I guess my first question would be, does it really matter? You are on a journey that is all about you, and exercising is all about you. I can say that as a longtime gym member, I never pay any attention to those around me, except for my gym buddies of course, and I have been there and out running looking all kids of wonderful before. The thing to remember, is that you have a goal to make healthy choices in your life, and that should remain your focus. Don’t let others hold you back…I doubt anyone is even paying any attention to you anyway!

I’ve tried it before, and it just didn’t work for me

Today is a new day, and you are on a quest for a new you. You are at a different place in your life, and in all reality, yesterday has no bearing on the here and now, especially where exercise is concerned.

I just don’t want to exercise

Give yourself an incentive. Give yourself a very good reason for getting out there and doing it. Set a goal, put it in writing, and start working toward it. If your goal is to exercise four days a week, maybe you could reward yourself with a specialty coffee drink from Starbucks at the end of that week. Maybe after sticking with an exercise plan for a month, you should have some really cute workout clothes. Many people set a 5k as a goal, and there are so many training programs out there to help you accomplish this. If the incentive is important to you, the exercise will be also!

Developing an exercise routine is something that so many of us hope to achieve, but it is common to have some of these excuses stand in our way. When you find yourself trying to use one of them, combat them with some of what I’ve shared here. You are making amazing strides forward. Let these forward strides continue with exercise. 1. Hi Jennifer – Your scopes are so enjoyable to watch and I have been wondering why you haven’t been scoping. After checking the list to make sure the notifications were on I saw you had been switched to the blocked list! Ugh. No idea how that happened but wondering if it has happened to others. I’ll go back and watch what I’ve missed on Katch. Thank you for your encouraging scopes and ministry to women :-)))).
