Do you know what it means to personally claim Bible verses? Are you aware of the incredible power you have when you do?

Bible verses

One of the things I love to do when I am having a specific problem with someone in my family is to decipher what is at the root of that problem, and then find a verse or series of verses that address that problem. Then I speak that verse out loud, inserting the name of the person having the problem into the verse, therefore claiming the truths in the Bible for my family.

Similarly, there are several Psalms that I use this technique for, not specifically to address a problem, but to claim these truths in a proactive way. For instance.  Psalm 1 is something that I often use in inserting my husband’s name.

It reads:

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Using my technique I would say:

Blessed is (husband’s name) who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but (husband’s name) delights is in the law of the Lord, and (husband’s name) meditates on his law day and night. (Husband’s name) is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and (husband’s name) leaf does not wither—whatever (husband’s name) does prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

This technique works great using Psalms, but it can be used in other ways, too. For instance if I am wanting to address someone’s anger, I might use

James 1:20-21New International Version (NIV)

Because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.  Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Changing it to read:

Because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in (insert name), which can save (insert name).

This can be done addressing the negative trait, like anger above, or it can be used using the opposite, positive trait that you would like to replace the negative trait with.  It is relatively easy to do, and several terms can be entered on biblegateway.com, which will give you a list of verses in which those key words occur.  In the above example I searched “anger,” but I could also search using the opposite trait such as gentleness.

Oftentimes I will take the chosen verses into the bedroom of the sleeping family member and pray it over them while they sleep. This is a very effective technique that can be used in several ways.

Words have power, we just need to claim the power in those words by speaking them out loud. My kids also love knowing that I pray over them at times, addressing their specific needs.

Prayer is always the most powerful weapon we have in overcoming the sin of this world, and personally claiming Bible verses is an amazing technique to know and implement.
