January is right around the corner, and there is no better time than right now to give your exercise motivation a kick in the butt.

Most of us have probably consumed way more calories than we should have this past month, which means that we may be carrying around a few extra pounds. I know I am!

While I am someone who regularly works out and goes to the gym, I have even gotten a little lazy with my whole workout routine.

Get something on the calendar

Schedule something fitness related that you are working towards. It could be a 5k in the spring, a weekly exercise class, or something different, but you must have some sort of fitness deadline created with a fitness event. And, you must commit to that now. I’ve got a few races already scheduled and paid for in the 2017 spring/summer season. So, there’s no looking back!

Break that something down into a weekly plan

Great. So you’ve got a race scheduled for May. Now, how are you going to achieve that goal? Count out how many weeks you have, determine your schedule and current ability, and set a realistic workout plan to actually achieve it.

Get some nice workout wear

Even if you already have something you like wearing to work out in, get something new. It doesn’t have to be expensive or all that elaborate. Even just a new top will do, but buy yourself something new to wear while working out. I get myself a new pair of running shoes every January. Once I buy them, I am so frugal that it will motivate me to use them rather than let them collect dust!

Get an accountability partner

It would be great if you had a workout partner, but even if all you have is someone to hold you verbally accountable, it is an awesome motivating, no excuses trick. Choose someone who will not accept any excuses you might give, someone who will encourage you, and ideally someone who will also check in on you rather than you always having to check in with them. Read more on choosing the right accountability partner HERE, but choose your partner, make them aware of your goal and plan in how to get there, and establish how you would like them to keep you on task.

Decide on a weekly incentive

We all work better with incentives. Incentives work best when they aren’t too far off in the future, which is why I am suggesting a weekly incentive. Maybe it will be a visit to Starbucks. Maybe it will be a date night with your husband. It could also just be an hour to devote to reading a book. But when you achieve your weekly workout plan, you deserve a reward. This is what makes it easier to keep going week after week.

  1. Great post! I think giving yourself a weekly incentive is brilliant. A lot of people reward themselves with food so having something other than that scheduled in if you meet your goals is a great way to stay on track!

    1. I get so much more done when working with an incentive. It really doesn’t matter what it is, an incentive is so effective to motivate myself for anything!
