I have been a member of various Facebook garage sale groups for years, and I have experienced the benefits as both a seller and a buyer, saving thousands of dollars in the process.

Curious? Here’s how these groups work, and how Facebook can save you thousands of dollars each year.

First, let’s talk a bit about the nuts and bolts of these groups.

What are these groups?

These are groups on Facebook that have been formed by an administrator(s) who provides buyers and sellers with a site to buy and sell things. These groups tend to offer a safer feel to both buyers and sellers than selling and buying on Craig’s List provides because the groups are generally closed to the public. Members are allowed into the group only after they have been approved by the administrator(s).

How can you find a group to join?

If you were to type the name of your city or community along with the words “garage sale” into the search bar on your Facebook page, chances are you will find one that is specific to your area. In fact, you may even find more than one. Once on the page of the group you would like to join, you should find a button that says, “join group.”

Just click on that and wait to hear back, which can take awhile at times.

Once accepted, how do these groups work?

Each group has its own set of rules clearly posted that you will be expected to abide by. Make sure you read the rules for each group. The rules are generally similar, but they do differ slightly from group to group.

Interactions are monitored by the administrator(s), which decreases the frequency of issues that can creep up at times. An added sense of security that these groups provide is that you have someone to contact if you experience trouble with a buyer or seller throughout your interactions.

So, now let’s talk about how these groups can save you money?

What kinds of things can you find on these sites?

The sky is the limit, really. You will find everything from home decor, household items, clothing, accessories, toys, outdoor things, to baby items and expensive electronics. Several items are new with tags or new in box, which makes them perfect for giving as gifts. You can also find handmade items, the sort of unique things you could find at a hip craft bazaar. Sometimes you can even find beautiful furniture pieces crafted by a local hobby woodworker.

How does a transaction work?

Generally, these details are up to the buyer and the seller, unless the rules specify something different.  Some transactions occur by appointment whether at the seller’s home or at a specified meeting place. At times a seller will have a simple bin on their porch where a buyer can pick up an item and leave the money in a designated area. This method can be really nice as it offers more flexibility to both the buyer and the seller.

These days, Facebook can be so much more than just a way to share your life with friends. Find a group to join and start saving some money today! You only need to check for groups in your area.

Whether you are looking to buy or sell, these groups can save (or earn) you a bundle!

  1. I just found you Thrifty Thursday Link Up Party. Nice post. I am just starting to get back into Facebook after a 3 year break. So much has changed.

Also, I was wondering how you added the Thrifty Thursday batch to your site.

    Thanks,

    Julia

    1. Hi Julia! Thanks! She offered a spot where there are link badges…follow the link, click on the text underneath the badge, copy it, enter it as text at the bottom of your post. Do this using the text tab not using the visual tab where you would normally type your posts. Anytime you are copying text or code, you follow these same steps. I am on wordpress, not sure if that is how you do it if you are using something other than wordpress HTH!

  2. Finally, a reason to LIKE Facebook (I’ve been fighting with being mad at them lately) This has to be the best kept secret ever. Would you please stop by my Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop and share this post? My readers will love it. If you like to get to parties early, we start at 7pm EDT Tuesday evenings. Don’t hesitate to share on our part even today. I am the host who checks out the last 10 or so entries. I don’t want my last to arrive guests to be ignored. Quite often I pick my Editors Pick feature from the end of the party. 🙂

    1. Sinea, I will do my best to post this over there this Wednesday, just let me know where the party is at. It will be late in the day since I don’t get home till after 9 on Wednesdays. See you there! It is a huge secret, or maybe not so secret anymore, but FB is a great resource to tap into at times.
