Summer. Life moves slower, time is more plentiful, and the days never seem to end. Summer is the perfect time to be intentional in building faith and in building relationships while having some fun, too.

Although it can be a bit of a challenge with young children, take whatever variation of a family bike ride that you can tonight. For years we had a bike trailer that could hold two kids and an additional seat on the back of the other bike since we had three kids who couldn’t independently ride for any distance. These days, we have many older riders and only a two kids who can’t ride independently.

Family bike rides are especially fun if you have a special destination planned along your route. Things like the park, an ice cream place, or even an open field to fly a kite are all things that we have done through the years. Bike rides are a great way to get some exercise while having some fun, too. Now you will also be able to make this simple activity a faith building experience as well.

When you return, read 1 Corinthians 6:19 and 20, which says, Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Talk with your children about how important it is to take proper care of our bodies and how getting enough healthy exercise is an important part of that. Things like brushing our hair and teeth, cleaning our bodies, and maintaing a healthy diet are all part of taking good care of our bodies, too.

Talk about some regular ways that your kids can get some regular exercise in addition to going for a bike ride. Ask your kids for additional ways that they would like to get some exercise together as a family.

Close your time together in prayer, thanking God for the amazing way He made our bodies. Thank him that taking care of our bodies can also be fun and ask for health, too. Be sure to also give thanks for families, fun, and for all of the amazing experiences and explorations that summertime brings.
