There are numerous things that make homeschooling such a unique experience. Of course juggling running a home and the schedule of a busy family is hard enough on its own, and then when you add homeschooling into the mix it is an enormous feat most days. There are days that nothing is better than saying, “No school!!!”

Of course challenges arise that can throw a wrench in things and getting through the school day, but do you take advantage of positive outside influences that can throw a wrench in things? Since there is one, there has to be the other, right?! This is what nice weather is in our homeschool life.

It’s a day for no school!!!

What exactly do I mean? Just as things like sickness, unexpected mishaps like broken washers, car accidents, or drop-in visitors, and last minute opportunities (good or bad) can disrupt our days, it is also important to have things like extremely tired kids, needing to refocus on building relationships, and good old fashioned and much needed fun interrupt our days, too.

Generally, we have temperatures that are somehow always below average for what seems to be 9 out of 10 days. This is so frustrating, however, when we have days that are actually unseasonably warm, we love to take full advantage of them.

Living in the North, the schools end up closing I would bet on average of seven times a year for snow days. Since our school takes place in the home, we are not subject to what the weather outside demands, so we keep right on moving along with our school days during the winter. While all the neighborhood kids are enjoying things like sleeping till noon, hanging out in their pajamas all day, and a day filled with having fun outside, my kids are hard at work, just like they would any other day.

The reason? Days like today, unseasonably warm days, are the reason. On these days, we have what I call “sun days.” These are days when the weather is simply too nice to have school. Generally I don’t tell the kids of my plan ahead of time since I am usually aware of the upcoming weather, which means there are squeals of delight when my kids are eating breakfast and I declare, “sun day!!!!!”

The element of surprise is the best part, and it keeps in line with the regular school kids who wake to discover their snow day, and even better is the fact that I am the principal who made the call, just as the principal of a school decides there will be a snow day. Yay me!

So while the neighborhood kids are cooped up inside on this glorious day, my kids will be outside soaking up every last drop of this amazing gift. YAY!!!
