When I picked up the book we are starting with the book club I was so excited to get started, and by the time I read the first chapter, I was in love. I just knew that there would be others who loved this as much as I did. Just talking with a few people about book this already, I have discovered that my hunch was right because other people are enjoying this book right along with me!

First things first. This is the book we are reading.

You’re Going to Be Okay: Encouraging Truth Your Heart Needs to Hear, Especially on the Hard Days

Chapter one is so powerful, and first I wanted to share a couple of my favorite quotes:

From page 23: “In other words, the very places and times when you feel God can use you least are when he may actually shine through you most.”

From page 26: “Defeat is not your destiny. You belong to the One who overcame even death, and that means there is nothing too difficult for him. It also means you can’t make him lose.”

I am reminded of how important our mindset is as we go through life, especially when we go through things that we know will challenge us.

I will admit that I am so good at remembering this when it comes to my kids. I so often remind my kids that if they go into a test assuming they will fail, they will not do well. I tell my kids to envision themselves winning their race, getting a best time, or finally hitting that home run. Yet, when it comes to me facing trials head on, I am so often heading into them with a defeatist attitude.

Why I am so bad with this I don’t really know. You’d think I would have learned this by now, but in all honesty I can see that I rarely apply this truth in my own life if I am not intentional in doing so.

But just as the author points out, doesn’t it change everything when we remember that defeat is not our destiny? Isn’t it amazing to keep in mind that we can’t make him lose? When he has a plan for us and when we are walking in that plan we can’t lose.

Isn’t that amazing and so powerful?!

Just as Holley states as the chapter is closing, we are not our circumstances. We are not our trials. What this means to me is this important fact…I am not defined by what happens to me. I am only defined by the one who created me.

And that is all that matters.

On Thursday I will write a response to chapter two, which is just as amazing as chapter one!

I will also be having a quick Periscope broadcast on Tuesday night, January 19th, at 9 pm EST where we can discuss our thoughts and reactions to the book together so have some thoughts and reactions ready to share.

Haven’t joined in on the book club yet? No worries, you still can. Just grab this book

and then pick up with us.

This book club is very laid back and designed for you to read just two chapters a week at your own pace. You can keep up with me in reading the first chapter of the week by Monday and the second chapter of the week by Thursday, or you can read the two chapters however it works best for you and catch up on the reaction blog posts in your own time.

My purpose in having this book club is just a way of encouraging us all to make time for reading something that will encourage us to grow, learn, and change, getting stronger in the process.

May you find encouragement in remembering that you are enough today!
