I guess it seems only fitting that after talking about clutter free kitchen countertops we talk about clutter free kitchen cupboards and drawers.

Sometimes things can get downright lost in my cupboards. This also means that when things get lost in my cupboards, I really have no idea what is in my cupboards, which then also tells me that I probably don’t need much of what is in my cupboards.

Enter the kitchen cupboard and drawer declutter assignment.

Much like many of my other declutter rules, I’ve got some basic rules for decluttering cupboards, too. And, there are also some things that can make keeping track of what is in our cupboards a bit easier. I’ll share a few of my sneaky secrets with you. Maybe they can help you keep your cupboards and drawers a bit more clutter free.

With that, here is my plan for kitchen cupboard and drawer organization that works!

1. Cupboards and drawers must be wisely organized with the proper tools

This is greatly accomplished through using dividers and other products that have been created to alleviate some of the headache that often comes with kitchen cupboards and drawers…including wasted space, which is one of my pet peeves.

Do you have skinny things that you can’t store well? Here is an awesome solution for that. No more pizza stone rolling out of the cupboard when you open it!

What about a cupboard that just doesn’t have enough shelving? These types of things have been lifesavers for me here.

Drawers can have the same problem. This is why some of these are my best friends.

2. To organize your cupboards and drawers, first assess what is and isn’t working so well

What are your exact issues with having kitchen cupboards and drawers that function well? What is your frustration with trying to find things in either your cupboards or drawers? These are the sorts of questions you will want to ask.

3. Now that you’ve clearly defined the problems, how can they be solved?

Maybe the products above can address your issues or maybe your issues are completely different. However, in most cases there will be a product somewhere that will solve nearly every problem.

4. Train your team

I again share this tip because if you have kids who are involved in the kitchen as I do, they have to know how to properly work with the kitchen as you have it designed to work. Show them how things belong, tell them what your expectations are, and then retrain as necessary.

5. Keep kitchen cupboards and drawers clean from food and other debris

This really isn’t hard to do, especially if you just choose one or two cupboards or drawers to quickly wipe out every night. If you have this as a habit, the crumby yucky mess won’t ever really get a chance to start. Cupboards and drawers that are just dirty are also more prone to being clutter collectors because we don’t want to deal with them any more than we have to.

6. Declutter regularly

Just as in decluttering with other things, regularly assessing whether you really need and use everything you have helps keep clutter manageable.

7. Always look for kitchen tools and gadgets that are multifunctional

I would rather pay more for a small appliance or gadget of some kind that will serve more than one purpose. For instance, I have found that if I have a large food processor and a powerful immersion blender, I can eliminate my need for a traditional blender. Between the two tools I have, they can meet my needs in my kitchen. Also, I like this griddle/grill gadget.

It does more than one thing. It is a multi functioning tool that can do the job of more than one appliance at a time. How can you choose things that multitask?

8. Organize your kitchen in a way that is logical

Where is your prime cupboard and drawer space? If at all possible, the things you use most would ideally go there. Likewise, if you only use things like your roasting pan once a year, that can be kept in a place that is more difficult to get to since it really doesn’t matter. In fact, do things like that even need to be kept in your kitchen? I keep some of these types of rarely used kitchen items in a storage area. Clearly labeled, of course.

9. Revisit as needed

Just because your kitchen cupboards and drawers worked well for you last year, it doesn’t meant that they will work well for you now. Things change, needs change, and we get more things or get rid of things. This means that cupboards and drawers need to be rearranged at times. Revisit how you have these things arranged and make changes as necessary…maybe once every six months or so.

10. Commit to it

Commit to spending a little time working on your kitchen drawers and cupboards regularly whether it’s once a day, once a week, or once a month. Adding this into your cleaning/organizing schedule means that it is more likely to happen, which is always a very good thing.

If you have been struggling to find ways to organize your kitchen cupboards or drawers in a way that works, maybe these 10 tips are just what you’ve been looking for. Give them a try!
