Buying a home, whether for the first time or the 34th time, is a huge step. I would argue that aside from anything related to family, it is second only to choosing a career path.

I have done this twice, and right now I am in this exact place yet again as my husband and I contemplate moving to a larger home that can accommodate our family of 10 a bit better.

When we moved the last time, I swore I’d never move again since the entire process can be so overly stressful. But, here we are again.

As we assess whether we are ready to make a move now or not, I feel that stress start to creep in almost immediately.

But, the reality is, I’ve learned a few things having done this twice already. And, I’m sharing these things with you.

These are seven the tips you need to know when you’re asking this question.

buying home

It’s a huge step no matter what

This has been true for me every time I dip my toe in the water with possibly buying a home. I think it’s important to say this right from the start so you can get over it and move on. It’s huge. Accept it. Now read what to do next.

It will feel scary no matter what

Similar to the first tip, recognize that most of us will never feel truly ready to buy a home since new things, especially those that are attached to a huge commitment, are often scary. Waiting for the “right time” or until you are “ready” often means you’ll be waiting from now until the end of time.

Quiet the noise

If you have people in your life who like to give you advice and aren’t really able to relate to who you are or where you are planning to go in life, you need to limit your exposure to them. People mean well, but when you have so many people trying to give you “advice,” it can easily become noise that will make it hard to hear your own voice well. Quiet the noises and focus primarily on your reality, your vision, and your voice.

Be clear on the needs you must have been in a home

The options are limitless when it comes to home options. Before heading out and taking these options all in, be clear about the needs you must have met as well as those you’d like to have met in the home you purchase. To begin looking at homes before you are clear on the attributes you need in a home is a great way to muddy the waters in what can already feel like an overwhelming process.

Know what your budget can handle right now

Being honest and based in reality is key here. It’s not about how much home you’d like to have, it’s about getting the right home with the budget you currently have to support it. You can always purchase again down the road, but avoid taking on more than your budget can handle at any step in this journey.

Who you listen to matters

A huge decision like buying a home should be one that is made with some wise counsel. No matter the circumstances surrounding this possible decision, you need a trusted lender along the way. As in most anything, there are always those who know more than you. Find those people and seek their advice.

It is important to find that trusted lender who can give you the wise counsel you need to make the best decision for you, just one smart step at a time.

You have so many options when it comes to a mortgage, but it’s important to choose the right lender. Check out the resources, tips, and tools offered by SunTrust Mortgage as you make this big decision. Purchasing a home is a big decision. For this reason, it’s important to be certain you’ve got the right fit.

Be brave

Don’t mistake this to mean being unwise. What being brave means is that when it comes down to it, that little bit of fear, overwhelm, and uncertainty will always be there. If you have done your research and received wise counsel from the people affiliated with the onUp movement, you can bravely trust that you are ready to move forward with your home buying decision.

Because choosing to buy a home or not is such a huge decision, working through these seven steps will take much of the overwhelm out of the process. When you do, this can be one of the most exciting things you will ever do in your entire life!
