This is what my trip to Walgreens consisted of for $10.42 out of pocket.  It includes 4 drinks, 6 air fresheners, and 8 bottles of Dawn.  I also bought newspapers, but there is nothing exciting about them so I didn’t include them either in the picture or in the above price.

My rule of thumb about newspapers is this:  3 or more coupon inserts – I buy 8, anything less than that I only buy 4 newspapers that week.  I file them for about three months, I will share more about my coupon system later.  I have tried it a few different ways and finally ended up with something that works well for me.

A word about free items.  When I purchase something that ends up being free after a store incentive, like these drinks were with Walgreens Register Rewards, I consider the item to be free at that time.  This also means, and this is an important point that I try to communicate to people I help with couponing, when you turn around to use those Register Rewards you cannot take their value off your total again.  Then you would be “double dipping” so to speak, which is not accurate.

For example.  These drinks were $1.50 today, and I came home with a Register Reward of $1.50 for each one.  Next week when I go to the store and buy body wash (for example) for $1.50, I cannot say that I got that body wash for free.  See how that works?  If the drink was free because of the Register Reward, then the body wash can’t be free also.  Does this make sense?  If not, leave a comment and I can clarify further.
