Isn’t it amazing how often things don’t go as planned? Things can go awry in little ways and things can go awry in big ways, but somehow, things so often have a way of not going as planned.

There are things we can do, however, so that our day or evening doesn’t need to be ruined when things don’t go as planned. In reality, if we expect things to go contrary to our plans, they have a way of upsetting us less than they would otherwise.

With that in mind, let’s discuss six things you can do when things don’t go as planned.

Expect the unexpected

I eluded to this earlier here, but knowing that things have a way of unraveling means that we don’t have to be surprised when they do. Then, we can just move forward in these additional ways without getting all upset about it.

Embrace margin

Put margin in your day, margin in your evening, and margin in your life. When you have margin, you basically have flexibility, which is a huge asset when things don’t go according to our plans.

Get to know grace

Yes. Grace is what you give yourself when things, whether under your control or not, don’t go as planned. Grace is important in your life in so many ways, get to know it, really.

Make peace

After you’ve given yourself a healthy dose of grace, make peace with the situation. This is true in any situation, but especially when things don’t go as planned.

Come up with options

If this is a recurring thing that didn’t go as planned, come up with some additional options. So often we keep trying to do the same thing and expect different results. This is simply unreasonable in most cases. It is so much better to come up with ways that you can make even some small changes to work towards producing a different outcome.

Look forward

Tomorrow is always a new day. Hold fast to that truth and keep your eyes focused on the road that is in front of you rather than the road that is behind you.

None of us like like it when things don’t go as planned, however, we can learn to better cope with these times with just a bit of intention. Try working through these six tips the next time things don’t go as planned.
