Do you want to make a change? It doesn’t have to be a big change, it can be a small change, really, and wanting to make a change doesn’t mean that you are somehow failing. I see wanting to make a change as a good thing. I find myself doing this all the time throughout my life.

I often encourage myself, my kids, and others to always be seeking to grow, to learn, and to change because in all honesty I think we can say that we all spend a lifetime pursuing the best us that we can be. There are many times that I search for a better way to do things, a way that I can tweak something that isn’t as efficient as I would like it to be, and an opportunity to head off on a slightly different path.

If you find yourself wanting to make a change for any one of these reasons or something totally different, here are some easy steps you can take when you are ready to make a change….and succeed at it!

1. Define your change

If you want to succeed in making a change in some way you will need to clearly define the change you want to make. Much like setting a goal, your change needs to be specific and close-ended. Otherwise, how will you know if you’ve arrived at your desired result? Neglecting to accurately define the change you want to make almost always ensures that you will fail.

2. Come up with a basic plan

While you don’t have to know the plan or the roadmap to completing your change entirely, you will need to have a basic overview of how you plan to get from where you are now to where you want to be. You need to have a basic plan figured out so you can proceed through these steps. You’ll see what I mean, just keep reading.

3. Determine the time

Now that you have at least a basic plan, you will need to determine how much time this change will take up on any given day. Let’s say you’ve decided that you want to lose ten pounds this month and that you will do that through a mindful diet and regular exercise. At this point you need to determine how much time it will take you to shop for, prepare, and eat more healthy meals as well as how much time you will be devoting to exercise in a day, week, or month.

4. Recognize the give and take

This is where I think so many of us fall short when it comes to taking on something new. When you know the time it will take you to focus on this change, you will need to make an accounting for that somehow. This is where the give and take comes in. If you are taking something else on in your life on a regular basis, you will need to give something away that takes that same amount of time. So often we take something on and just expect it to magically happen. I don’t know about you, but I don’t just have extra time floating around in my day. I need to make it happen. This is done using the give and take mentality.

5. Give away

Now that you’ve accepted the give and take, you need to give away something. Make it an even swap, or as close as you can, regarding what you are taking on to make the change and what you are taking off your plate to make the change.

6. Divide your new thing into three different steps

I think this is also a common way that we fall off the wagon of change. We bite off way more than we can chew. We get drastic in trying to make the change as fast as possible, and it just isn’t attainable. Change comes in small steps, baby steps in most cases, and to expect anything different is setting us up for failure. Find a logical way to divide the change you are going to make into three steps.

7. Take only one step at a time

Resist the urge to charge forward. Why? Because most times we either burn out, veer off course, or can’t even get past the first step because to take giant leaps is generally not feasible. The biggest problem with biting off more than you can chew and then failing is that you will end up discouraged. There is nothing worse than being discouraged. Take your time taking only one step at a time. Move toward change slowly.

8. Evaluate

Evaluate how you are doing after each step. Are you closer to the desired change? Do you need to make an adjustment? Make an accurate assessment after each step you take toward making a change.

9. Celebrate your victories

It is always important to celebrate your victories when making a change. Even if they are incredibly small victories, celebrate them. It is in celebrating these victories that we have the momentum we need to keep moving forward. Celebrating victories is so encouraging.

10. Keep moving

When setbacks, derailments, and completely falling off the wagon happen, just keep moving. Get back on track, don’t beat yourself up, and just get refocused. Keep moving forward toward the change that you set your sights on. It has a much greater likelihood of actually happening if you just keep moving!

Do you long to make a change? To achieve success, it takes some planning and some intention, but these steps are just what you need!
