how a mom can pray for her childAre you wanting to pray for your child but not sure where to start? Is worrying about praying “right” keeping you from praying for your child at all? Are you wondering what the benefits of praying for your child are? Maybe you are just looking for a simple and basic structure to follow in praying for your child.

Oftentimes when it comes to prayer, people tend to overcomplicate things. Sometimes we are afraid of doing it wrong or leaving something out so we don’t even start.

There is no greater gift you can give your child than the gift of prayer. Praying for your child on a regular basis can affect them more than anything else you could possibly do as their mom. Sometimes, prayer is all we have.

Why is it that we sometimes we exhaust all other options when dealing with a disobedient, defiant, exhausting, or a wayward child while forgetting about the most powerful tool we have?

While I don’t have an answer for these questions, which I am so guilty of as well, I do have a great place to start and the reasons for getting started at all.

What are the benefits of praying for our children?

  • Prayer is the only manual we need. God promises in our lives, including in our lives as a parent, that when we ask for wisdom and guidance, He will give it. Sometimes, we just need to get out of the way of our own problems, worries, and hurts and let God. He promises never to leave us or forsake us, and this includes as a parent looking for answers to how to raise the children He has blessed us with. Prayer is our 9-1-1 operator, we just have to call.
  • Prayer gives us a place to lay down our worries and our concerns. The list of things we can find to worry about as moms is endless, especially in today’s world. When we pray, telling God our worries about our children, we no longer have to carry those worries around. When worry begins to creep in again, give it back over to God. Tell Him your worries, and He will comfort you in them. Prayer gives us freedom from worry.
  • The prayers of a mother’s heart are a way to live far beyond her life here on earth. Prayer is the way that we as moms can reach future generations. Lean in close for this next part. The bottom line is this: prayer changes things. For this reason, prayer is a way that we as moms can change the direction of the future. God cannot do, He cannot comfort, He cannot guide if we do not ask. Prayer is how we ask, and it is the only true way that we, and we alone, can (with God’s help) solve, change, and influence the things that come into the lives of our children – and in the lives of those who follow in our children’s footsteps in the future.baby-784607_1280
  • Because of the power of prayer, it brings us true peace like nothing else can. When worry creeps in, when our heart breaks for our child who didn’t make the team, and when we feel like we are completely failing as a mom, sharing all of these things and more through prayer brings peace.
  • Being a praying mom creates praying children. When our children see prayer modeled, they become children and adults of prayer. Praying as a mom teaches our children to become prayers themselves.

Now that we know the benefit of praying for our children, what does it look like?

While prayer is nothing more than a conversation that comes out of a personal relationship with God, sometimes it is nice to have a general roadmap of where to go. Of course detours are often where we find the greatest beauty, but having a general idea of where we are headed can be helpful.

  • Pray for your child’s faith. Pray that they would have a personal faith, and that they would love the Lord with all their mind, soul, and strength.
  • Pray for the choices they make each day. Our kids are bombarded by countless influences, countless opportunities, and countless problems in any given day. Pray that they would be mindful of the choices they make keeping both the present and the future in mind. Pray that they would act in obedience to the truths that you have laid on their hearts.
  • Pray for their safety and protection. This would include their physical, spiritual, and emotional protection. We have an enemy here on this earth, and our children are his prey. Pray for their protection. Praying the armor of God is a great place to start. You can find that in Ephesians 6:10-18:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

This can also be a great set of verses for you and your child to work through memorizing. The child can pray this prayer for themselves, too, and actually go through the motions of putting each piece on. My younger kids have loved doing this!

  • Pray for grace in their life as well as in your own life as a mom. Pray that God would fill in the gaps that we leave behind as moms, and pray for His grace when your kids don’t get it right. Pray that he extends them the grace they may not even know to ask for. Pray for His grace to cover them each and every day.family-434708_1280-2

Prayer is an invaluable tool that we have been given, especially in the life of a mom. Prayer doesn’t have to be overwhelming though, and it can be as basic or in depth as you want it to be. Sometimes I can only pray, “Please help me, Lord,” and this is just fine, too.

If you are looking to pray for your children, if you want to have some help in raising your children, surrender your worries, shape the future, find some genuine peace, and raise children who pray, following these directed steps are a great step in getting you on your way.
