Summer. Life moves slower, time is more plentiful, and the days never seem to end. Summer is the perfect time to be intentional in building faith and in building relationships while having some fun, too.

Find some gardens or flowerbeds that need some weeding. Spend some time pulling weeds. Although kids may be resistant to working during an activity that is supposed to be fun, there is an important lesson here. You can provide them with a reward when they are done, this usually helps 😉

Once you are finished with your weeding, read Matthew 13:24-26, which says, “Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.”

Explain how we have an enemy, too, and he lurks around putting weeds in our lives through roadblocks, struggles, and doubt among many more weeds. Oftentimes it is our enemy, satan, who is behind our hurt, negativity, and insecurities, and when we can recognize these things as the enemy whispering in our ear (putting weeds in our lives), we can overcome his schemes.

Go on to explain that we need to pull the weeds in our lives, just as weeds need to be pulled in a garden.

Close your time together thanking Him for the parables Jesus gave us, the Bible that is our guidebook, and for the beauty of creation, families, and summer fun.
