In my home, life is busy, and I’m guessing that it’s really no different in yours. We can make changes and implement strategies to take control of your mornings, however.

For me, getting up and starting my day long before my kids get up is essential. When I don’t, I tend to blow it in some way, which is never any good at all.
That quiet time in the morning is essential to me. But, here’s the thing. In order to make it happen in the morning, I have to plan for it the night before.

In all actuality, I treasure my quiet time in the morning, but I really love my quiet time at night, too. This is true even though I’ve got kids who are staying up later and later as they get older. There is just something I love about doing some planning, housework, and even cooking in the kitchen at night when the house is quiet. Or at least, mostly quiet.

Here’s where to start.

My nightly routine starts with a house that is clean…or should I say a house that appears clean. First, I hide some of the clutter that gets left behind (just click on that link). With such a busy house of kids and parents coming and going, especially during the week, there are just never enough hours in the day to get everything done to completion. We work on what we can during the week to get things put away right. But, we really catch up on the weekend.

For years, even before becoming a mom, I have found great value in getting a jumpstart on the day by getting some things done the night before. I love making something for breakfast in the morning. And, I love getting laundry started and ready to be hung out in the morning. I also love prepping things for our school day in the morning. Finally, I am always sure to finish the kitchen since I absolutely must walk into a clean kitchen in the morning, and I must have all stairways and hallways free from clutter as well.

What I really love doing most at night, however, is doing what I call a “brain dump.” This is just getting all the thoughts racing through my mind down on paper. Sometimes it is things I need to remember to do. Sometimes it is topics for blog posts.

Yet other times it is things I need to remember to go over with my kids in addition to so many more things. In fact, I usually have a piece of paper and a pen next to my bed since these random thoughts seem to pop into my head when I am on the verge of falling asleep!

Realistically…

I find that at night I do best with activities that require little brain activity since my brain is often spent by 10 p.m. This is when I update the family calendar, answer basic business and personal emails, look for interesting things on Facebook, and even make some needed phone calls at times.

Do you pay attention to your atmosphere at night? This is also an important part of having a great night. I love having a scented candle burning, listening to music, podcasts, or even something lighthearted on t.v. at times. Being surrounded by a clean home, a nice smelling candle, and something quiet to listen to really anchors my day. This sets me up for a great morning the following day.

Then, getting enough rest certainly is key to having a good day tomorrow. If you are looking for some ideas on how to get a good night’s sleep, try reading 10 Easy Tips For Getting a Good Night’s Rest. These things aren’t hard, but they can make a huge different in getting a good night’s sleep

Can I share a secret with you? I learned much of what I know about making the most of my mornings and my evenings by taking a couple of life-changing courses from Crystal Paine of Money Saving Mom. One is called Make Over Your Mornings and the other is called Make Over Your Evenings.

The great thing is that these courses are available to you, too. It’s everything I needed to really get organized, which gave way to having an amazing day! Just go HERE to check out Make Over Your Mornings and HERE to check out Make Over Your Evenings.

  1. Hi Jennifer! There are a couple of things I love to do before bed that make such difference for me the next day. A clean kitchen is so important for my outlook the next morning. Waking up to shiny sinks and clean counters helps me to focus and stay on track with my morning routine. Also, I love taking a warm shower or hot bath. I sleep so much better and I love the minimal time it takes in the morning to pop out of bed (after a hot cup of Jo of course), get dressed, wash my face, put on my makeup and off I go! My biggest challenge is going to bed early enough that I can get up early. That is one of my goals…to go to bed earlier so that I can get a good nights rest and get up by 5 a.m.

    1. Wow, Ida. Seems like you’ve got a pretty good routine in place. I do love getting up early…it’s the getting to bed early part that I need to work on 😉

  2. I will be prepping my lunches, as much of the dinner as I can, and making sure the clothes are put in the drawers for the week that I made! I have fallen to the wayside on this. I really want to get my house finished and uncluttered. I also need to be more firm with my children and cleaning their rooms prior to going to bed. I haven’t done that the last few nights and it drives me nuts!

    1. Love prepping. I don’t necessarily love the doing part of the prep, but it is always so worth it!

  3. I took Crystal’s course in August and it has made a huge difference in my day. I am enjoying your posts and I’m going to add a reminder on my calendar to retake it 6 months after the first time.

    1. Yes, you will get more from it every time! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the posts. It’s been fun to go through it as a community!

  4. The night before can make such a difference to me! I always try to have the dishes done and counters clean the night before. I’ve been trying to focus more on getting the little kids outfits picked out since doing this course. Especially my 6 year old girl -she can tend to take forever to pick something out and get dressed. It has made such a difference! I also look up the lunch menu so I can know if I need to make and pack home lunches. I know these sound so small – but they have really helped.

Those things all help my family – but I need a good book to read when I go to bed, that really helps me calm down, and relax before bedtime:)
