Summer. Life moves slower, time is more plentiful, and the days never seem to end. Summer is the perfect time to be intentional in building faith and in building relationships while having some fun, too.

Because we celebrate many patriotic holidays during the summer in American, it is the perfect time to talk about serving and sacrificing for others. After all, we would have no independence as a nation without the sacrifices of countless young servicemen and women. Those in the military continue to willingly lay down their lives for our freedoms if need be, which can be such a hard concept for kids to understand.

Spend some time today reading some age appropriate historical pieces about our military or about any of the wars that our nation has been involved in. One of our favorites is this one:

George Washington: The Crossing

It is a fairly quick read. We can read it in about an hour. Whatever historical pieces you like, spend some time reading them today. Teach your children about the gift we have in the freedoms that we so easily take for granted.

Then, speak to your children about the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for all of us. He laid down his life so that we could live with him in heaven. There are some amazing picture, young children type books that speak to this, too.

Share this Bible verse, John 10:11, which reads, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Close your time together in prayer, thanking God not only for the gift of Jesus, but also for the gift we have in our servicemen and women.
