Summer. Life moves slower, time is more plentiful, and the days never seem to end. Summer is the perfect time to be intentional in building faith and in building relationships while having some fun, too.

When we think of summer, we so often think of finding a body of water somewhere to have some fun in. We live in Michigan and are only about an hour’s drive from Lake Michigan, which is a beautiful lake – although incredibly chilly this year since summer has been so slow in getting here!

Although lakes, rivers, and oceans are a great place to have some fun, have you ever thought of these bodies of water as a chance to talk to your kids about matters of faith? If not, here’s how you can.

First, have some good old fashioned fun at one of these places. Head out for an hour or for the whole day, but have some fun splashing around in some water.

When the water fun is done, grab your Bible and read Matthew 3:16, which says, “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.”

This is the perfect time to talk to your kids about baptism and how baptism is a way for us to take ownership of our relationship with God. It is a way for us to say that our old ways of living are no longer because they have been washed away. Baptism is our opportunity to say that from that point forward, we are a new creation – meaning – we are living a new, clean life. We are starting fresh.

If your kids have been baptized, this is also a great time to look back through pictures from their baptism. Explain how God has chosen them as His own, and that with baptism, they. or you, have promised to embrace learning what it means to live a Christian lifestyle.

Bring your time together to a close by spending it in prayer. Thank God for summer and the beauty, refreshment, and promises that water can help us remember and for the gift of being a chosen child of God. Thank Him for the Bible, that we can come to Him in prayer, and that we have been given families in which to play and have fun, but also to learn and grow closer to God and to each other.
