Part of living intentionally and in being an intentional mom means taking the time, making the time to be a mom even when I really don’t want to be.

As moms we face all kinds of challenges, and I wrote of some in posts like How to Be a Mom When You Don’t Like Your Kids, To the Mom Who Wants to Turn in Her Mom Card, and How to Get Out of That Mom Funk. At times we are just exhausted, overwhelmed, and wanting to be anything but intentional in our life as a mom.

However, there was one day in particular during this past winter when I almost missed being an intentional mom. Here’s what I mean.

Living in the North, winter and I have never been good friends. One might even say that we are enemies, but it is more than safe to say that I am not a winter gal. Most people know this about me, and it even is kind of a joke in my family.

Because my kids are well aware of my aversion to all things winter, they do try to help me get through it each year. They also do enjoy being outside in the winter, and we have a killer sledding hill, too, but as a general whole they are not huge fans of winter either. I guess it’s probably because most years, winter lasts forever.

One day this year while my kids were outside, I had two kids come to the door separately to tell me that I needed to come outside for a minute. In all reality, they know it better be good to ask me to come out there! For this reason, and also in keeping with my calling to be more intentional as a mom, I decided to go out to see what all the fuss was about.

There was only one of my kids around when I came out, and he took me over to the side of the house, pointed, and then declared, “Look at God’s masterpiece.”  These are very descriptive words for my son to choose, but he was right. I was kind of in awe for a moment or two. My daughter then came around and said, “Did you see the beauty God created?” Not necessarily words that were out of character for her, but still very descriptive and perceptive words for a young girl of 10.

My kids were right. It was truly one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The snow had these amazing ripples in it that made it look like it was a rock formation, much like you might see in a gorge that has been made by a slow moving river over time. It was truly breathtaking, captivating my attention for quite some time.

I was reminded in that moment of the need to take time to just be. Making the time to soak in the people, places, and things around us, finding the beauty that is there in everything. Yes, I do believe that in everything, everything, there is beauty to be found.  We just have to take the time to look with an open mind and an open heart.

I was so glad that I took the time to enjoy that experience and to enjoy that moment with my children, too. It would have been so easy to dismiss them, especially because it involved going outside in the snow.

It is amazing to think of what we might miss when we don’t take the time to be intentional in the decisions we make. Let’s commit to being there, being fully present, and to having skin in the game of this motherhood thing.
