Don’t get me wrong, your life needs to include plenty of rest and relaxation, too, but the time that we have to devote to getting things done should give us the most value.

The thing is, to get more done, you need to use the time you have in the best way possible. This is what productivity is.

But don’t let the word “productivity” stress you out. It really can be simple.

Whether you’re a stay at home mom, a working mom, a working woman with no kids, a woman with grown kids, or a woman who stays at home with no kids, we all have more things to get done than we can usually get done.

These productivity hacks are simple, actionable, and will transform your day – starting today.

1. Devote time to planning every single day

Ideally you will make the time to plan your day the night before so you can hit the ground running, but spending some time planning your day is one of the best tips in productivity.

If you’re looking for the easiest way to do that, you need my time management sheets. It’s not a planner, it’s an entire system that will show you exactly how to use time to your advantage.

You can check them out (& grab 45 other resources) all bundled together in the Ultimate Productivity Bundle right HERE.

It’s filled with planners, books, printables, courses, and more all focused on home management, time saving skills, goal setting, self care, and just getting the things done that are most important to you.

2. Make a list of larger projects that you then break down into manageable lists

I prefer to have a master list that I then use to break projects down into monthly lists. From there I break them down into weekly lists and finally daily list. You can read some more on lists in Why I Make Lists, and Why You Should, Too, and How to Create an Effective To-Do List.

3. Identify the problems in your day early

In having a planning session and making lists, you will easily be able to identify where snafus are going to happen. These are things like those times when you have to be in three places at once. Look for the problems in your schedule and begin brainstorming solutions right away.

4. Use time blocks

Time blocks are really nothing more than scheduling a start time and an end time for something to be done in your day. This could also just be an overall time for a project. For instance, you might decide to spend 30 minutes on cleaning your closet. In using a time block like this, you have planned how much time to devote to any one activity. This is a great help in being productive.

5. Be realistic

Realize that you can’t get it all done right from the start. Approaching your tasks from a realistic vantage point will increase your productivity chances.

6. Prioritize your tasks

Deciding what is the most important to you is essential to productivity because you then know what to attack first. Because we all know that life happens at times, having your projects prioritized means that when you can pick back up, you can get right back into the swing of things.

7. Multi-task when appropriate

Multi-tasking is so effective in being productive. I multi-task in the kitchen all the time. I multi-task when working. I multi-task when cleaning, wait on hold on the phone, and even when I drive. When I have an empty car, I am almost always taking care of a phone call or two that have to be made.

8. Tackle your most dreaded task first

I love the book, Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time, and it speaks to this very thing. Knowing we have something that we dread coming up is a real downer. When it comes to productivity, taking the biggest, most difficult, or most dreaded task on first really gives us a boost to keep moving.

9. Start your day before everyone else gets up

Even you are not a morning person, strive to get up at least 10 to 15 minutes before the rest of the family. This gives you the chance to anchor your day, to gather your plans, and to be in control of your day before it threatens to take control of you. I generally have three hours to myself in the morning, and I am lost without those hours!

10. Schedule pockets of calm in your day

This is a concept that I talk about a lot in my new book, A Realistic Action Plan For the Weary Mom: 15 Days of Hope From The Intentional Mom, because not taking this time to refuel, even if only five minutes, is a recipe for burnout. As moms, this leaves us feeling overwhelmed. Being overwhelmed is not generally in the company of being productive. Scheduling pockets of calm three or four times throughout your day is an awesome way to keep you happy, to keep your kids happy, and to ensure that your days are productive.

11. Leave margin in every day

Do not, and I mean do not, fill every moment of your day. Leave blank spots on your to-do list, leave times when you have nothing to do, leave plenty of white spaces on your calendar. Trust me, this really will help with your productivity.

12. Know when to delegate

Don’t feel bad about asking and accepting help. Sometimes, you need to be the one to seek out that help. Take the time to examine, to really examine, what others can help you with. It is ok if things will not be done just as if you had done them. It really will be ok if the towels are not folded just as you fold them. However, having that extra help on several little things will make a huge difference in your own productivity.

13. Reexamine regularly

When something isn’t working out the way you had planned adjust your list, alter your plans, change your schedule. Sometimes, this may mean just crossing something off your list. When you do, don’t feel bad about it.

14. Find a system that works for you

I am a paper and pen girl, but maybe digital planners, calendars, or list making tools are more your style. The point is to have something that works for you. This is what makes my time management sheets so amazing – it’s an entire system.

15. Accept and give grace

Accept that you have limitations, accept that you are human, accept that you live a busy life. Then move on. Finally, cover yourself with plenty of grace. Grace is something we all deserve and it is often something that we freely give others but are stingy with when it comes to ourselves. Grace needs to be a regular part of your life.

Living a life of intention also means being productive in everything we do including the lives we live with our loves ones, the work we do, and the way we are good stewards of the blessings that we have all received. Try these productivity tips, make the commitment to taking the Make Over Your Mornings course, and be the best you that you can be each and every day!

  1. What a great list! I wouldn’t know what to do each day if I didn’t spend some time planning and making a list. Just recently I started using time blocks more often and that has definitely helped me stay on track better.

I also 100% agree that margin time is a necessity! You never know when something unexpected will pop up during the day.

    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

    1. Margin is so hard to give though, isn’t it. This is why I needed to put this on the list…maybe I can go a bit easier on myself 😉
