Summer. Life moves slower, time is more plentiful, and the days never seem to end. Summer is the perfect time to be intentional in building faith and in building relationships while having some fun, too.

Do you remember how much fun a three legged race can be? I have pictures of church picnics, field days at school, and birthday parties come to my mind, but three legged races can also be a fun family building activity. Now, they can also be a faith building activity.

The awesome thing about three legged races, is that you have to work as a team, which makes them the perfect thing to learn all about the importance of two people being equal.

For this activity, you will need something to tie legs together. This can be rope, a bungee cord, or even a bed sheet if need be. Gather whatever you are using to tie legs together, and divide your family up into teams of two people. If you have an odd number, someone can go twice.

Create a start and finish line and send teams on their way. This doesn’t really even have to be a race, but an exercise in learning to work together. If you have the teams try it a few times, they should get a bit better at it.

After the races are over, talk about how greater success happened when both people worked together. Moving at the same speed, walking in the same stride, and taking the same size steps are all part of working together in a three legged race. Then, grab your Bible and read Ephesians 4:16, which says, “From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

Emphasize how God gave us each other, especially you as a family to work together. As a family you are designed to support one another, to encourage one another, and to work together just as the body works together. Each member of your family is important and unique, and when you work together in unison, you will go further than if everyone did their own thing within the family unit.

Close your time together thanking God for the wonderful way He made our bodies, for the gift of families, and for the amazing things that families can accomplish together.
