When it comes to living a life of purpose and intention, it really is all about finding the right balance. We all have demands, deadlines, responsibilities, and requirements placed upon us, but in spite of all those things it is important to intermix some of the things that we enjoy, some of the things that fill our tank, and some of the things that fill our jar, too.

In reality, if all we ever do is give in to the demands that fill our lives, we really won’t be living much, will we?

So then, if we can agree that balance needs to be found, how do we find it?

I came up with a catchy little thing that I like to call my 3-2-1 plan, and it is a guide that can help us prioritize and find balance without putting too much emphasis on what we have to do while also not spending too much time only on what we want to do.

Here is my 3-2-1 plan for finding balance in your life, and it’s really pretty easy to do!

Let’s start with the three

Because in most cases we have to focus on the things we have to do more, we are starting with focusing on three things that we have to do each day. Of course there can be many more than three things we have to do, but when it comes to the 3-2-1 plan, we are starting with only naming three “have to” things in this first step.

As you plan for the day ahead whether you do it the night before, ideally, or the morning of, start by filling in three things that you must do that day.

Next, let’s tackle the two

After scheduling in your three mandatory things, it’s time to fill in two things that you want to do. Think of these as more selfish things if you will. They don’t have to be big things or overwhelmingly time consuming things, but fill in two things that you want to do.

Then we are left with the one

After choosing three things that you have to do and then two things that you want to do, you are left to fill in one thing that you could do. I love having some optional things on my schedule or to-do list for the day. These are often simple things that can slide into a pocket of time that gets freed up. Because I am a firm believer in leaving margin in my schedule, I can get some free time when things go particularly smoothly.

Choose one thing that will need to get done at some point but something that isn’t pressing while also being something that would be helpful to get done. The good thing about this is that it is something that really will be a relief to have done when you make the time to do it.

The thing I love about the 3-2-1 plan is that it has what I feel to be the proper balance when it comes to living a life of purpose and intention. It is necessary to fulfill the demands that are placed upon us, but it is also important to have things we choose to do as part of our daily lives.

When scheduling your evening, morning, or daily routine, try implementing this 3-2-1 plan, and you will be on your way to living a life with just a bit more intention.
